Putting It on the Line

This is the sign of a household that is attempting to potty train at night.

So far, it hasn’t gone so well.  Violet wets the bed at least once per night and becomes irate if I suggest she use the potty.  I think she resents the interrupted sleep (so do I!) and acts like she’d almost prefer to lay on wet sheets rather than get up and take care of the situation.

Last night we were up at least six times.  It all blurred together at some point.  Only one of those times was she wet, but every time she wakes up I try to get her to use the potty, which is in her bedroom.  I have to talk to her in a low, soothing voice — like talking to a skittish horse, I’m guessing — or else she’ll start crying, wailing and gnashing her teeth.  At that point, even if I can get her on the potty, nothing is going to be deposited.

Every time I have ever started a new phase with Violet (getting rid of the swaddle, getting rid of the pacifier, converting the crib to a toddler bed, daytime potty training, etc.) I have doubted my decision at some point.  Of course, I’m doubting this one now.  I have vowed to give it two weeks (it has been less than one week so far) and then reevaluate the situation.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I may not follow your advice, but I would still appreciate receiving it!

  1. She is trained for day then? I kept Lise in a pull-up at night when she was day potty-trained bc she hated the feeling of a diaper or a wet diaper at that point so she’d wake up to go in the toilet. So there was never a wet pull-up bc she hated having the diaper on at night. Maybe that might help?? I wish you luck! She will get it soon, don’t stress too much (easy to say huh)!

  2. They say nothing to drink after 6p.m. and no milk deffinately. If she falls back to sleep quickly, try getting her up just before you go to bed. Sometimes that will help. GOOD LUCK.

    • Tonight I had to give her a very small drink of water because she insisted on it. I have considered waking her up to go potty, but haven’t done it yet. I’m pretty sure she will be furious, but I may try it tonight. Thank you for the advice! (And luck!)
